FS IV 02 – 26 Delegation versus Authority

چکیده
Delegation versus Authority by Daniel Krähmer The paper studies the role of delegation and authority within a principal-agent relation in which a non-contractible action has to be taken. The agent has private information relevant for the principal, but has policy preferences different from the principal. Consequently, an information revelation problem arises. We contribute to the literature by assuming transferable utility and contractibility of messages and decision rights. While delegation leads to loss of control, it facilitates the agent’s participation and leads to an informed decision. Moreover, message-contingent delegation creates incentives for information revelation. We derive the optimal contract for the principal and investigate when delegation outperforms authority.

Une Approche Dynamique pour la Gestion des Politiques de Délégation dans les Systèmes de Contrôle d´Accès
Task delegation is a mechanism that supports organisational flexibility in the humancentric workflow systems, and ensures delegation of authority in access control systems. In this paper, we define an approach to support dynamic delegation of authority within an access control framework. The novelty consists of reasoning on authorisation dependently on task delegation events, and specifies them...
متن کاملThe Limits of Authority: Motivation versus Coordination
This paper studies the effects of open disagreement on motivation and coordination. It shows how – in the presence of differing priors – motivation and coordination impose conflicting demands on the allocation of authority, leading to a trade-off between the two. The paper first derives a new mechanism for delegation: since the agent thinks – by revealed preference applied to differing priors –...

Delegation of Authority as an Optimal (In)complete Contract The present paper aims to contribute to the literature on the foundations of incomplete contracts by providing conditions under which simple delegation of authority is the solution to the complete-contracting problem of the parties. We consider a hold-up framework where both parties profit from an investment that raises the value of an...
متن کاملInformation Gathering , Delegated Contracting , and Corporate Hierarchies
In a typical corporate hierarchy, the manager is delegated the authority to make strategic decisions, and to contract with other employees. We study when such delegation can be optimal. In centralization, the owner retains the authority, which fails to motivate the manager to acquire valuable information, leading to suboptimal decisions and inefficient incentive provision to the worker. Benefic...
متن کاملThe Lure of Authority: Motivation and Incentive Effects of Power
Authority and power permeate political, social, and economic life, but empirical knowledge about the motivational origins and consequences of authority is limited. We study the motivation and incentive effects of authority experimentally in an authoritydelegation game. Individuals often retain authority even when its delegation is in their material interest—suggesting that authority has nonpecu...
